I love the power of a good layout. And I can’t tell you how satisfying it was to see this floor plan change and bring the design to life.
This particular space was in need of furnishings and accessories, but also needed better flow. Figuring out how people move in their home (and why) as well as how they should move around their home, were some of the most important questions to start off with here. It can completely change the way one lives and feels in their home.
This is a bit of a tricky layout as there isn’t an entryway or a hallway – you walk directly into an open concept living and dining room. The sofas were placed around a corner with a fireplace and TV on top. There was a desk off to one side with an armchair next to it and the dining room had a couch dividing the space. My eye really had nothing to focus on, and I was having trouble making sense of each space. While an open concept room is great for its openness, it can also feel confusing and disjointed if the spaces within it are not defined.
However, once I was able to understand movement around the room and how it could be used, I was able to define and give purpose to each part.

The space is now split up into various defined rooms – an entryway, living room, and a dining room. The desk was moved into an extra bedroom as it wasn’t needed here.
Now when you walk in, there’s a small entryway console behind the sofa for you to put your things on as well as a runner to help ground the space. You’re then greeted by an open layout with cozy sofas to give you a sense of warmth, a fireplace in the middle of the room to give you something interesting to look at, and a dining room with a mirror that reflects all of the pretty changes.
One of my favorite parts of this transformation had to be revamping the existing sofa and armchair. I absolutely loved the overall shape of them with the curved arms, but I was not a fan of the legs, the piping, and the extra cushions on the 3-seater sofa. Luckily, I was able to redesign and reupholster them in different colors.
The existing fireplace was repainted white and moved to the center so that people can enjoy it in both the living & dining room. It’s also a great spot for a future Christmas tree!
