A Dresser Gets a Bright & Modern Makeover

I’m so excited to show you this transformation!

This dresser, which is now being used as a media unit, is actually part of a larger room makeover project that I’m working on. I hope to have the full room on the blog earlier next year, but I just couldn’t wait that long to show you how awesome this beauty turned out…

As you can see, this is a very ornate wooden piece of furniture that can be harder to work into a more contemporary space. The homeowner got this from her parents, and thought that I would probably want to get rid of it, but I could see the potential and knew that we could make it work. I actually love it when I can use hand-me-down pieces because it adds so much personality and meaning to a home!

Generally, I wanted a lighter color palette for this room, so refinishing the furniture in white was a natural direction to go in. We thought about painting it other colors, especially gray, but white would help make it look modern and timeless.

We also thought about spray painting the original handles, but I really fell in love with the idea of using acrylic handles, which would also help update the look. We ordered a few modern acrylic handles from AliExpress and had them installed when the piece was being painted white by Mohammed Ameer and his son. If you haven’t seen the work they did for me on my media unit, then you need to check this post out.

Since this piece is primarily being used as a media unit, we decided to remove the middle doors and put in a few more wooden shelves so that the cable box and the sound system could be put inside. They sat on top of the unit before the makeover since there was no space for them. We did, however, have the doors painted white and put in storage so that the homeowner can add them back in, when needed.
