Last year, I helped my dear friend Huong with her living room makeover, and this year she really needed some help with her guest room!
To be fair, I think these before pictures are a lot more dramatic than I think the situation really was at her house, but they do show you how confused she was about how to use this specific space. It was an office, craft room, guest room when she needed it to be, and any other kind of room that she could use it for.
Huong thought that since this is a small room already that she should remove a lot of the doors so that they weren’t taking up space. And because she was using this room for all sorts of things, she hadn’t really gotten around to building the bed either. So we started off with reinstalling the doors (for practical storage and closet space), and had the bed built as well.
I knew I wanted bright white walls in this room, so we mixed a couple of white paint samples and came up with a bright white that wasn’t too stark or cold. From there, we pretty much just added a few more furnishings from IKEA (her fave!), some cute textiles from H&M Home and Home Center, as well as had a wooden shelf made for some IKEA brackets – I love the raw wood look of it!
Even I was surprised at how pretty the room came out after a few purchases and tweaks. Just adding a few things really changed the entire vibe of the space…

A good friend, Zaza (from the amazing @zazahardytravels account on IG!), had painted some succulents and cacti for Huong in watercolor, so we had them all framed and hung them up with her awesome “The Big Lebowski” poster. I love that we were able to use something so meaningful to make a small gallery wall in this room!
I love “shopping” in peoples homes when I’m styling, and Huong really had some amazing stuff to work with. Many of these items were things that she had collected over time, and it was just a matter of putting them all together.
It really helps bring some life and character to a space when we can personalize with those kinds of details! I hope you enjoyed the space!

Love this-I used to be in a townhouse…and this is an awesome use and fantastic development of ‘that room’! (And they likely won’t have to repaint if they leave! Wink, wink!)
