An Adorable Sea World Themed Kids Room

A friend from Riyadh, Sarrah, recently redesigned and redecorated her children’s bedroom, and sent me pictures and info on how she did it! It’s so cute that I couldn’t resist sharing 🙂

She has 6 year old twins – a boy and a girl – so designing around both of their needs seems like it would have been a challenge, but not when you have some inspiration!

As my kids are growing up I realized that they needed a bigger space, so I decided to swap our guest room (which is bigger in size) with the old kids room. I spent several days thinking about a theme and luckily got inspired from a painting that my daughter did for her school assignment. She painted a shark and I used that as a theme for decorating the room. We call this room “Our little Sea World” now.

A Chat With Sarrah…

How did you go about decorating the room? How did you plan it out?

Since I already had a lot of the stuff for the kids, I planned it out so that I could utilize most of the pieces from their old room. Specifically…

• I used an old table top, removed the legs, and got drawers from IKEA to use as a base.
• I changed out the knobs on the dresser with something that was in line with the theme. I picked them out from Zara Home and painted them blue.
• I bought picture frames from IKEA. I used old photos and a few themed paintings that were done by my twins. My personal favorite is the frame with hand prints of all of us – mom, dad, the twins and my one and a half year old!

How did you work with your theme?

I picked out various shades of blue from the Jotun catalogue for the walls. I bought two single beds, themed quilts, pillow covers, and cushion covers from Pottery Barn. Since it’s a kids room, toys are stored under the bed with some nice storage boxes from Center Point, and a few decorative baskets from Pottery Barn. Most of the frames, lights and racks are from IKEA.

How did you decorate and sort out the little details?

Like always, I pick out what I like. I used two clear jars on the shelf by the bed and put my son’s dolphin and shells in it with sand.

For the shelves, I asked a carpenter to cut out some holes and added some decorative jute rope so that I could match the theme.

I was able to pick up the Anchor Mirror from Pottery Barn, and the rest of the decor I ordered online from Target.

I love the reading nook! Tell me more about that space.

I created another very small reading nook next to the staircase using leftover materials from the old kids room. I also used some of the pieces available from my birthday decor and event planning work –PEACH. It was an unused and extremely boring small space, which has now been transformed into something functional and colorful!
