I absolutely love a good upcycle. And generally, I’m all for it especially if the style is in line with the direction your room is going in.
I’ve spent quite a bit of time on our local classifieds buying amazing pieces that I have reworked for my home, and have even used some of those in my projects (check out the couch and armchair in this post)! And since I’m not much of a DIY-er, I often enlist the help of the amazing craftsmen in the region for my mini-projects. So when it comes to anything related to refinishing or re-staining wood, I ask Mohammed Ameer and his son Danial for their help. I’ve talked about this incredible father-son duo in the past as they did a fabulous job on My TV Stand Makeover a while back. Not only do they have the unique ability to see the potential of a piece, but can restore it to brand spankin’ newness!
If you’ve been following along on my stories, I recently had a project where a small desk was in desperate need of a makeover. The owners of this piece weren’t sure they wanted to keep it, but I knew I could make it work beautifully in the space after tweaking it a little. It had great bones, but some of the wood had chipped off, the top was badly scratched up, the handles were mismatched, and while I did like the color a lot, it didn’t really go with the direction that our space was moving in. The shape and the style were perfectly on point though!

The room that this desk was going to be in had a warm gray, white and medium wood tones color palette. So the black-brown color was stripped, and the desk was re-stained in a wood tone that would help show off the grains of the wood and would also fit well with the color palette of the room. I ordered some oil-rubbed knobs from Amazon to complete the look as well. It’s the simplest change, but has the most amazing impact in the space now…
So if you’re on the fence about a great little piece of wood furniture, consider painting or re-staining it. You never know, it might become your favorite piece after some tweaking! And if you’re a non-DIY-er like me, you can always have someone refinish the piece for you.
