It feels insane to say this, but it took 1 year to finish this project and get it photographed… And there’s still one more rug that could have been added to this room. However, I’ve accepted that this is the world we live in – delays, availability issues, custom furniture issues, COVID restrictions/schedules in general, etc. It all takes time right now!
But I’m glad that I can finally show you a project this year.
This family room was actually inspired by another project makeover. Nadine saw Theresa’s Home on my blog and told me that she hoped that her home could look and feel the same way too. She basically wanted lighter, brighter and not a lot of warm tones.
For Theresa’s project, I added quite a few traditional elements to reflect her style. Nadine wanted the same thing in keeping with her own style. In addition, she wanted a minimalistic look, but her existing furnishings were making the room feel way too heavy and dark. So we took a few pieces out of the space, lightened it up by tweaking some of her existing furnishings, added some lighter blue and gray, brought in functional furniture (especially for her son’s gaming station), and then added soft lighting.
They were small, yet very strategic changes. Here’s how it all turned out…

The two tall bookcases that came as a set with the media unit were taken out of the space as well as Nadine’s son’s gaming table/breakfast table. The gaming table was replaced with a smaller and more manageable desk.
Luckily, we had 2 great couches to work with, and found a matching armchair in another room. Two of those pieces were reupholstered in a lighter fabric and we then added some color in the curtains, cushions and accessories. The smaller warm-toned rug was replaced with a much-needed larger rug, and we brought in a sideboard for storage and entertaining purposes.
My favorite part of this space is definitely the symmetrical sets of family photos on the back wall. I just love how your eye goes straight to them when you walk into the room.
Hope you enjoyed seeing how this space was transformed!
