When I walked into Neda’s house, I knew this was gonna be good. I loved her style. It was light and bright with neutrals and earthy tones as well as an occasional pop of blue and teal. I was thrilled when she said she wanted to keep heading in that direction, but with a bit more coziness in the mix.
So while she had picked all of the right furnishings for a Japandi Boho vibe, the space needed more. And it also needed a bit of oomph to enhance her existing pieces. Using her furniture as the base, more pieces were added with texture, color and character in mind.
The other thing that was important to do was to figure out a suitable layout for the living room. Neda wanted more of a conversational set up and no TV in the space. For a focal point, I was craving/feeling some height and character. So rather than going for something like a console with a statement piece of art or a mirror, adding a set of tall bookshelves – with lots of opportunities to bring in character with accessories – seemed like a fantastic option.
The dining room just needed a bit of reworking, editing and some more functional furniture. The table was beautiful and perfect for guests, but the overall space lacked storage and countertops to serve additional food/drinks. This is a critical consideration for people who like to entertain, in general.
In a big open concept room like this, it was also important to give each space its own bit of drama, and to think about how each room would look from the other. This can help your eye to settle and to be drawn to various things rather than seeing the space as a large monotonous whole. Since the bookshelves in the living room weren’t visible from the entrance to this space, statement lighting in the living room and dining room were a must!

While the tweaks to her existing furniture were mostly related to placement, they were highly effective.
The rug was shifted into the living area, the sofa brought off the wall and placed on the rug, and the accent chairs were moved to the other side to clear up the wall that would become the focal point of the room. The arched lamp was also moved to the other corner of the sofa to fill an empty corner.
Luckily, the dark brown wooden blinds from her previous home (that were far too big for this space) were cut down and reinstalled inside the window frame by Sedar, the same company that made them. It turned out to be a much more cost effective solution than buying new window treatments!
The additions to this room, including the statement lighting really took it all to the next level. Not only do both lighting fixtures give you something beautiful to look at, but they contribute to creating that coziness factor at all times of the day. In general, lamps and picture lights were added to the space to step up the cozy vibes.
The set of 3 beautiful bookshelves give Neda the opportunity to use them for interesting accessories and memorable photos as well as a bit of storage. It’s also a great conversation piece when guests are sitting in this room. The textured bench in front of the shelves is small enough to be moved around and can be used for extra seating.
