I’m so excited to show you Part II of the Safaniya Drive Project! We started with Vina’s living and dining room makeover, and then moved on to her multifunctional and much-needed office.
What often happens with a multifunctional space is that your functions sort of get mixed up if you don’t clearly define the purpose of your room and create spaces for those purposes. Vina and Andy needed an office, an office storage space, a Zumba practice room, as well as a gym. Since the space wasn’t ever really clearly defined, it eventually became a room full of random unorganized stuff.
Vina is a Zumba instructor and does a lot of her instructional materials at home, so she needed a bit of open space with a mirror as well as storage for her Zumba stuff. Her office supplies and books were in a filing cabinet and a large desk, but she needed more space, and it was time to make it look prettier and more organized. What I really love about the room makeover process is that it gives you time to sort through your stuff and declutter. A lot of these items weren’t needed, and some of them weren’t working in the room. So things were moved out into other spaces that made more sense (vacuum, steamer and other appliances that needed to be in a separate closet), and others were sold or donated.
We took inspiration from Vina’s existing shell clock and decided to go in the coastal/beach theme direction with this room. We kept the paint color as is, but pretty much replaced most of the furniture with new pieces that were far more functional and useful in the space…

The space in front of the mirror was left open on purpose so that Vina has enough space to practice her Zumba lessons.
This room has a lot of custom pieces in it, and each piece was designed with aesthetics and functionality in mind.
The banquette seating (with storage) was made by Arabian SAS and is the perfect way of creating seating without taking up too much space in the room. We also needed a custom top for the desk area since we couldn’t find one at IKEA, so Arabian SAS was able to make that for us as well.
The large cabinet at the end of the room (designed by me and made by Arabian SAS) houses all of the office storage materials, files, Zumba equipment as well as any other extra items that needed to be stored. One of my favorite parts about this unit is the printer drawer that is in one of the upper cabinets. There’s a hole in the back of the unit for the plugs as well.
I’ve said this before and I can’t stress how much I mean it… if you have good furniture, I would always recommend trying to refinish or reupholster it rather than selling it and buying something new. It’s expensive to buy new furniture here, so refinishing can be a very cost effective way of updating your look. However, if it doesn’t work in the space, that’s another matter, but sometimes if you think out-of-the-box, you can use those pieces in interesting ways in other rooms.
This table below was originally in Vina’s dining room. It’s 2 decades old and was quite worn out, but had really great bones. We had the pieces refinished by Mohammed Ameer and his son Danial, to a much lighter finish on the table, and made the stools black. I wanted the same color on the table to be on the stools, but it wasn’t working out, so Danial came up with the brilliant idea of making them black. I love them so much more in black!
I hope you loved this office as much as I loved designing it!
